CAPE TOWN - President Jacob Zuma has announced measures to try and halt the xenophobic attacks and has appealed for calm and restraint.
In a special address in Parliament yesterday, Zuma told
Members of Parliament (MPs) the violence directed at immigrants was
unacceptable.
All parties were united in condemning the violence that has so far caused the deaths of five people in KwaZulu-Natal and thousands of others to flee their homes.
Zuma’s acknowledged complaints about illegal immigrants, but says
it's wrong to view all immigrants as here illegally or involved in
crime.
"No amount of frustration or anger can ever justify the attacks on foreign nationals."
Zuma says the government's acting to stop the violence but while
parties were united in condemning the violence, Zuma also came under
fire.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema said, “Mr
President you taught our people that everything else must be resolved
through violence and therefore you must take full responsibility for
having misled our nation, peaceful resolution does not exist.”
